Brown to forget about England selection
Kevin Brown has admitted to ruling out the opportunity of an England call-up ahead of this year’s Four Nations.
Even though Widnes struggled for consistency throughout 2015, their club captain was one of the stars of Super League last season, scoring 20 tries in 22 appearances and scooped a Player of the Month award in May.
This resulted in calls being made for the 31-year old to be included in Steve McNamara’s England squad for the test series against New Zealand, but Brown was overlooked.
George Williams, Gareth Widdop and Luke Gale were the England coach’s havles choices, and Brown admitted that the prospect of a call-up was not something he was waiting for.
“To be honest, I didn’t expect to get the call for England,” Brown told Love Rugby League.
“Steve obviously picked George Williams who is a fantastic young player and I’ve absolutely no qualms with that.
“I knew myself that my form was good and I’ve got confidence in myself and I believe that I’m a really good stand off, but I’m sure the other sixes believe that as well.”
England will be taking part in the Four Nations tournament at the end of the 2016 Super League season, coming up against Australia, New Zealand and Scotland.
Even if Brown was to go and build on his impressive year from 2015, the stand-off admits that he is already ruling out the prospect of a call up in the autumn.
“The thought of making the Four Nations squad hasn’t crossed my mind,” he said.
“All I know is that I’ve been consistent and I’ve been playing well and I spoke to my coach who has been really happy with how I’ve been doing over the last couple of years.
“When I first arrived at Widnes, people said I should have a goal of making it into the England squad but I’ve sort of forgot about that now.
“At the end of the day, it’s another person’s opinion and I don’t want the outcome of one of my personal goals to be subject to somebody else’s opinion.
“I will just try and do what my head coach at Widnes wants me to do and hopefully help my teammates on the pitch this season. If I can do that and keep performing like I have been, then I’ll be very happy.”
