Challenge Cup round-up: Red Star Belgrade lose in Cumbria, Longhorns nearly cause upset, Edinburgh knocked out
History was made in round one of the 2019 Challenge Cup.
The oldest amateur club, Millom, met with newcomers Red Star Belgrade, who were making their debut in the Challenge Cup. Millom ran-out 38-10 winners at Coronation Field up in Cumbria on Sunday.
Ethan Kelly put in an outstanding display for Millom, while Darcy Etrich was the standout for the Serbian club. It was a successful afternoon for the Challenge Cup, with the ground-breaking match being streamed live on the BBC Sport website.
Elsewhere, Irish outfit Longhorns came close to pulling off an upset against NCL Premiers Lock Lane but they fell short to a 16-10 defeat.
Scottish expansionists Edinburgh Eagles failed to make it through to the second round after losing 50-16 at Normanton Knights.
The RAF are the only military side left in the competition. They beat North Herts Crusaders 22-6, while The Army lost 18-16 at Bentley. West Hull knocked the Royal Navy out of the Challenge Cup following a 42-12 scoreline.
In an amateur ‘Battle of the Borough’ match, Wigan St Patricks claimed the bragging rights as they won 24-12 at Leigh East. George Williams and Micky Higham will make the second-round drawat the clubhouse of St Pats on Monday at 6pm.
