Championship Preview – York City Knights v Workington Town

Ed Smith should return to Gary Thornton’s York City Knights squad, but Jason Golden, Sam Scott and Simon Brown all look set to be sidelined for Sunday’s Kingstone Press Championship fixture with Workington Town.

James Ford (groin) and Matty Nicholson will also be monitored before Thornton finalises his squad.

Thorton said: “Workington have made a great start. They played pretty well against Sheffield and were unfortunate not to get anything, and they’ve also run Halifax close.

“We know it will be a tough ask, and they’ve got a lot of experience in guys like Ewan Dowes and Peter Lupton.

“Jarrad Stack looks a handful. They’re a big set of players and they’ll give us issues all over the park.”

Graeme Mattinson and Elliott Miller are closing in on their returns, but Town coach Gary Charlton does not expect either to play on Sunday.

Charlton said: “We’re still learning – it doesn’t happen overnight – but we’re more than happy with how we’re going. We’re heading in the right direction.”
