Championship round-up: Broncos march past Toronto, Leigh crash again

London Broncos continue to set the Championship pace after they mauled Toronto Wolfpack 47-16 on Sunday.

Danny Ward’s men are four from four and have taken apart two of the fancied challengers at the top of the table, Toronto and Featherstone, in the past two rounds.

They started well and opened up a 12-0 lead in the early stages, though tries from Richard Whiting and Andrew Dixon meant that Jarrod Sammut’s drop goal put the Broncos 21-12 to the good at the interval.

After an even opening to the second half, the two sides exchanged tries but it was the dismissal of Dixon that caused the floodgates to open.

Toronto have now dropped as many points this season as they did in the whole of last season in League One.

Leigh crashed to a third defeat in four games as once again they threw away a lead to go down 32-26 at home to Toulouse.

The Centurions led 26-16 with barely four minutes to play, but tries from Gavin Marguerite, Mark Kheirallah and Stanislas Robin in the final three minutes of the match turned the game on its head.

Toulouse’s comeback was made even more impressive by the fact they had played more than half the match with 12 men following the sending-off of ex-Wigan prop Eddy Pettybourne for a high shot on Jamie Acton.

Featherstone bounced back from their reversal to London last weekend to beat Sheffield 58-14.

Man of the match Anthony Thackeray scored a brace of tries as the hosts ran in 11 in total to send the Eagles to a fourth successive loss.

Shaun Robinson also scored twice on his 150th career appearance and Rovers scored regularly throughout the match to consolidate third place in the Championship table.

Rochdale showed an encouraging improvement from their first game of the season, a 38-6 thumping by Dewsbury on Monday, to push Halifax all the way before going down 26-20 at the Crown Oil Arena.

Hornets led 8-6 at half time, but a Will Sharp double inspired the visitors to fight back and take victory, with Ed Barber’s try making the game safe before Harvey Livett’s late consolation.

Dewsbury made it three wins from four with a comfortable 20-0 win over Swinton Lions, while Batley came from behind to beat Barrow 32-12.

Results:

Batley 32-12 Barrow
Dewsbury 20-0 Swinton
Featherstone 58-14 Sheffield
Leigh 26-32 Toulouse
London B 47-16 Toronto
Rochdale 20-26 Halifax
