Championship round-up: Kay hat-trick, Toulouse edge Featherstone, Leigh beat London
There were a couple of surprising results in the Championship on the weekend.
Barrow star Ryan Johnston scored in the last minute of the game to snatch a 20-18 win for the Raiders against Batley Bulldogs at Craven Park on Sunday. Italy international Dean Parata also scored for Barrow, while Scotland back Dave Scott got on the scoresheet for the Bulldogs.
Quentin Laulu-Togagae scored two tries to help Halifax win 42-6 against his old club Sheffield Eagles at Olympic Legacy Park on Sunday. Wales forward Chester Butler also crossed for two tries for Fax. St Helens first team players Adam Swift, Jake Spedding, Matty Costello and Jack Ashworth featured for the Eagles on dual-registration.
Leigh Centurions pulled off a fine 40-30 victory over London Broncos in the capital. Welsh brothers Rhys Evans and Ben Evans scored a try each for Leigh and London respectively. Centurions skipper Harrison Hansen put in a man-of-the-match performance.
Rochdale full-back Declan Kay scored a try in the final seconds of the game to seal a 32-27 win for the Hornets against Dewsbury Rams at the Tetley’s Stadium on Sunday. Wakefield forward Jordan Crowther played for the Rams, while Warrington duo Morgan Smith and Pat Moran featured for the Hornets.
Ireland winger Liam Kay scored a hat-trick to help Toronto Wolfpack beat Swinton Lions 62-14 in their first game in Canada this season. It was held at Fletcher’s Fields due to maintenance work going on at their Lamport Stadium home.
Toulouse Olympique put in a very strong performance to beat Featherstone Rovers 36-10 at Stade Ernest Argeles on Saturday. France full-back Mark Kheirallah racked up a tally of 16 points from one try and six goals.
Toronto, Toulouse, Featherstone and London are currently in the top four, but Leigh Centurions and Halifax are level on points with four-placed London. Swinton have yet to win a game this season and sit bottom of the table.
