Championships salary cap lowered
The RFL has confirmed the long-muted lowering of the salary cap in Championship and Championship 1.
Currently the Championships salary cap operates by limiting a club’s player costs to no more than 50% of the club’s income and is capped at a finite limit of £400,000 for Championship clubs and £200,000 for Championship 1 clubs.
For the 2010 season, the new salary cap will limit a club’s player costs to no more than 40% of the club’s income with the finite limit set at £300,000 for Championship clubs and £150,000 for Championship 1 clubs.
Payments to players who are under 21 on 31 August in the year preceding the Salary Cap Year in question will continue not to count towards a club’s salary cap spend. There are other dispensations available by application to the RFL’s Registrations & Salary Cap Manager whereby a club may agree certain relaxations to the salary cap limits.
