Cunningham: We were sloppy
St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham admitted his team were far from great when they had the ball, after enduring a comprehensive 25-0 defeat against Wigan Warriors.
“I can’t fault the effort from the majority of the team. We hung in there and we tried hard for each other but we give away 50% of the ball,” Cunningham told Sky Sports.
“Every time they got a foothold in the game we just gave them cheap possession.
“That’s not how you win big games of rugby. You are playing against a very good Wigan side and you have to keep hold of the ball and you have to kick it long and put them in bad places and we didn’t do that.
“We weren’t great with the ball. We never kept hold of it for one.
“It’s been a bit of a broken week for us but there’s no excuses from our side. We got beat by a better side tonight.
“We looked a little bit frantic. That’s Rugby League. The boys have been on a bit of a good run and it was always going to come to an end at one point and unfortunately tonight was the night.
“We will regroup now and get ready for next time.
“It wasn’t really about the result for me it was about the performance and I didn’t think we did ourselves proud tonight.
“I don’t think we showed what we can do as a club and as a group but there is always next time.”
