Daryl Powell impressed with Warrington youngsters
Warrington Head Coach Daryl Powell was impressed with the way his younger players played during their 30-14 win over Salford.
Apart from a couple of first-team players, Warrington mainly played with academy kids during the match. A late flurry of tries saw them run out comfortable winners in the end.
Powell said he was optimistic about the future of the club, based on the younger players.
After the game, he said: “Tonight was about a couple of things. There’s a few players who needed some extra minutes. I wanted them to just work on a couple of areas of the game and then obviously the young players.
“I think that was the dominant feature of tonight was the the young players at Warrington. We got a great picture tonight, there’s some real quality young players coming through the system.
“People like Josh Thewlis who has played a fair bit at first team, I thought he was a standout at fullback, and obviously a couple of his passes to his to his brother to score, which you don’t see that often. That would have been pleasing for them and the family. That was great to see.
“I thought it was great I’ll all the way through. I thought the young players acquitted themselves really well and show that the future is really bright.”
Powell set for round one
Powell also confirmed after that match that he is decided on his team to face Leeds in the opening round of the Super League.
It will be Powell’s first competitive match since taking the job.
He added: “I think after tonight, I’m pretty set on on round one. Hopefully everything goes to plan. Next week, players have got a weekend off now to to relax.
“I’m looking forward to it just looking forward to the challenge that the season is going to present and obviously that that first game against Leeds away from home.
“I know there’s a lot of Warrington fans travelling over there and looking forward to it. It’s a great opportunity for us and we know it’ll be tough.
“I was watching their game against Hull and the physical presence that they’ve got we’re going to have to deal with. But I think for the first game on Channel Four, it’s a great opportunity for us to go and show what what we’re about and whilst it’ll be a tough challenge. We’ve got to make sure it’s a real tough one for Leeds.”
