Dream XIII 2023 off-contract Super League players
With the transfer window now open, Super League clubs are free to speak to players from rival clubs for the 2023 season and beyond.
May 1 marked the opening day for the recruitment window in Super League. There are plenty of big names still without a contract for the 2023 campaign.
We take a look at a dream 13…
Bevan French – Wigan
The Wigan speedster remains without a contract for the 2023 season. The 26-year-old signed a one-year contract extension with Wigan for the 2022 season. In-form Jai Field has made the full-back position his own, which has seen Bevan French feature on the wing since his return in 2022. He was named in the Super League Dream Team in 2020.
Sam Tomkins would be our other pick – but he looks set to end his career at Catalans, with negotiations for an extended deal underway.
Tom Johnstone – Wakefield
Wakefield winger Tom Johnstone is another big name on the off-contract list. On his day, the 26-year-old is one of the best wingers in the competition. There is no doubting his talent; but he has been troubled with injuries during his career. He has undergone two ACL reconstructions and has had multiple concussion issues.
Ricky Leutele – Huddersfield
Huddersfield centre Ricky Leutele is another big name on the list. The 32-year-old made more than 120 appearances in the NRL for Cronulla Sharks and Melbourne Storm. He originally made the switch to England with Toronto in 2019. The former Samoa international joined Huddersfield in 2021. Leutele also represented Combined Nations All Stars in 2021.
Guy Armitage – Toulouse
Former rugby union centre Guy Armitage originally made the code switch in 2019 with London Broncos. Having represented England Under-20s in the union code, Armitage joined Toulouse for their inaugural season in Super League. He has had an impressive season so far in a struggling season for Toulouse – scoring five tries in eight appearances.
Regan Grace – St Helens
St Helens and Wales star Regan Grace is yet to confirm his future beyond 2022. The 25-year-old signed a 12-month extension with the champions for the current campaign. Grace played rugby union as a youngster before making the switch to league with St Helens in 2014.
Jake Trueman – Castleford
Castleford star Jake Trueman is another big name on the list without a contract for 2023. In November 2018, he signed a four-year extension with the club which runs until the end of 2022. The playmaker represented England at the World Cup Nines Down Under in 2019. So far in 2022, he has scored five tries and assisted 10 more.
Jacob Miller – Wakefield
Wakefield half-back Jacob Miller signed a four-and-a-half deal back in 2018 with the club. He is therefore still without a contract for the 2023 season. The 29-year-old had been linked with a move to Wigan during the off-season. So far in 2022, he has scored three tries, with six assists.
Matty Lees – St Helens
Matty Lees is in the last 12-months of his two-year extended contract with St Helens. The England international has been linked with a move Down Under to test himself in the NRL. The 24-year-old is in impressive form and may follow former team-mate Luke Thompson in making the move to Australia.
Matt Parcell – Hull KR
Hull KR hooker Matt Parcell has been linked with a move back to the NRL. The 29-year-old only signed a 12-month extension at Craven Park for 2022. He has previously been reported to be joining either Brisbane Broncos or Dolphins in the NRL next season.
Hull’s Joe Lovodua is another impressive off-contract hooker for the 2023 campaign.
Mike Cooper – Warrington
There are a number of Warrington stars still without a contract for 2023. One of those is prop forward Mike Cooper. The former NRL man has made more than 100 appearances for the Halliwell Jones Stadium side. Team-mates Stefan Ratchford, Josh Charnley and Jack Hughes are also players without a contract.
Rhyse Martin – Leeds
You’d imagine Leeds fans would want to re-sign their goal-kicker for 2023 and beyond. The 29-year-old re-signed at Headingley Stadium for the 2022 season – but his future is yet to be confirmed. So far this season, Rhyse Martin has scored three tries and kicked 24 goals.
Liam Farrell – Wigan
One of the in-form back-rowers of the competition, no doubt Wigan will be hoping to tie down one of their star men. Liam Farrell will turn 32 later this season. His current five-year deal runs out at the end of the current season. He has scored seven tries so far this year in the Super League.
Elijah Taylor – Salford
Former NRL forward Elijah Taylor joined Salford on a two-year deal ahead of the 2021 campaign. At 32-years-old, the Red Devils captain may go around again in 2023. He has won 11 caps for New Zealand on the international stage.
