Exclusive: Wigan Warriors hooker Sam Powell attracting interest from rival Super League clubs
Wigan Warriors hooker Sam Powell is attracting interest from rival Super League clubs about a move away from the DW Stadium next season, Love Rugby League can reveal.
The 31-year-old has caught the eye of clubs in regards to a potential signing for next season, with Huddersfield Giants among those who have discussed a move for the long-serving Wigan man, Love Rugby League understands.
Powell is under contract next season but faces plenty of competition for the hooking role at the Warriors in 2024.
Youngster Brad O’Neill has impressed and has been tied down long-term, while Kruise Leeming will join Wigan on a multi-year deal next season after the Warriors won the race to sign the Gold Coast Titans hooker. It has left Powell facing an uncertain future, and clubs are aware the player could be open to exploring his options.
Love Rugby League has been told the Warriors have not actively offered Powell’s services out to clubs, and the player and club are on incredibly good terms about the prospect of what happens next. But the hooker is believed to be weighing up his future options.
Any move would signal the end of a career-long association with Powell and his boyhood club. He made his debut in 2012 and has gone on to play over 250 games for the Warriors, winning the Grand Final in 2016 and 2018 along the way.
Powell recently underwent shoulder surgery after Matt Peet revealed the hooker had been playing with the injury in the early part of 2023.
He made his return to action in the reserves earlier this month before coming off the bench in last weekend’s victory against Hull FC.
But clubs are monitoring Powell’s situation as the end of the season approaches and with the Warriors well stocked in the hooking department for 2024, the option of a move could become a reality.
