Respected rugby league broadcaster Ray French has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List.

The 71-year-old former school teacher enjoyed a hugely successful career in both codes of rugby.

He holds the distinction of being a dual code international, having represented England in rugby union and Great Britain in rugby league.

Ray was born in St Helens and played both rugby union and rugby league for his hometown. He arrived at Knowsley Road in 1961 and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club before signing for Widnes.

Ray joined BBC television in 1981 and has commentated on a host of major events including four World Cup finals and every Challenge Cup final from 1982 until 2008.
