Gareth Widdop excited to get full season with George Williams
Warrington half-back Gareth Widdop has said he excited by the prospect of playing with George Williams for a full season.
Williams arrived at Warrington from NRL side Canberra in the middle of the 2021 season. He was able to form a partnership with Widdop, as the pair played in Warrington’s final seven matches of the season.
Now with a full pre-season behind them, Widdop is hopeful their partnership will continue to grow in 2022.
Speaking to Warrington’s YouTube channel, Widdop said: “George came halfway through the year in what was difficult circumstances for himself.
“To get a pre-season and a full year playing together, I am really excited for it.
“I played with George in the past at international level, so to playing with week in, week out with him is great. He’s a quality player, and we”ll be working very closely.”
Widdop aiming for consistency in 2022
Meanwhile, on his own form, Widdop is hoping to back up an impressive season in 2021 in the new year. His performances saw him nominated for the Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel award.
He added: “I’m always trying to be consistent every year, not having one good year and one bad year.
“For me, it’s taking what I did good from last year and trying to do that and improve. There is always room for improvement.
“Last year was a good year. On a team note, it didn’t finish how we wanted, but last year has been and gone- it’s a whole new year.
“It’s a whole new team, and new coaching staff so it’s a big year ahead.”
Warrington face Wigan and Salford in pre-season in testimonial matches for Stefan Ratchford and Lee Mossop respectively. After that, they then start their Super League campaign away to Leeds, a match which will be broadcast live on channel four.
