George Burgess released by St George Illawarra Dragons
NRL club St George Illawarra Dragons have released former England international George Burgess from the remainder of his contract.
The 30-year-old prop has left the Dragons with immediate effect despite having another year on his contract to run.
Burgess made just four NRL appearances for Anthony Griffin’s side in 2022.
“The Dragons thank George for his contribution to St George Illawarra and wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” a club statement from the Dragons read.
Burgess underwent hip resurfacing surgery after leaving Super League side Wigan in 2021. He looked set to retire from rugby league but was offered a contract by St George Illawarra.
The Dewsbury-born prop won 15 caps for England on the international stage. His last appearance for his country came in 2018.
Burgess’ most successful spell in his career came at South Sydney Rabbitohs. He made almost 150 appearances for the club between 2012-19, winning the NRL Premiership in 2014.

St George Illawarra have signed former Samoa international Zane Musgrove ahead of next season on a two-year deal.
Musgrove has made 62 NRL appearances for South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers.
Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran said: “Zane is an established NRL player with a strong physical presence and will be a great addition to our forward pack.
“We’ve been looking to build our forward pack and we’re excited to see Zane join the Dragons.”
Musgrove represented Samoa at the last World Cup in 2017. He also represented the New Zealand Maori in the 2021 All Stars match.
