Huddersfield Giants boss confirms interest in ‘destructive’ Hull forward Andre Savelio
Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson has confirmed his interest in out-of-contract Hull back-rower Andre Savelio.
As previously revealed by Love Rugby League, Huddersfield were believed to be interested in the 28-year-old, who is without a deal at the MKM Stadium beyond the current campaign.
An exit from the Black & Whites looks increasingly likely, with Catalans Dragons also previously reportedly interested in the player.
That speculation is now believed to be wide of the mark, but Giants boss Watson has confirmed his interest for the 2024 campaign.
Savelio has been at Hull since the start of the 2019 campaign, making 58 appearances for the side to date, scoring 17 tries.
He has featured just 12 times in all competitions this year, with his most recent appearance coming against the Giants last week in Super League Round 20.
The former St Helens and Warrington forward was limited to just eight appearances in the 2022 campaign.
Ian Watson confirms interest in Andre Savelio
“He is somebody we’ve looked at,” Watson confirmed to media on Thursday afternoon.
“He’s a good player, he’s kind of the right age for us.
“He’s destructive in attack, and he played pretty well last week against us. He carried Oliver Russell nearly 25 metres down the field at one point.
“He’s somebody who is of interest for us, for definite.”
The John Smith’s Stadium outfit are also set to add Hull winger Adam Swift to their squad for 2024, while Theo Fages could be headed for an exit.
The 28-year-old France international has been linked with Catalans Dragons for 2024, with a year remaining on his current contract at Huddersfield.
“The situation that it’s looking, it’s looking like that’s where he’s heading. We’ll let Theo make the call on that,” Watson commented when asked for an update.
“He’s a great bloke and he’ll come out in the right time and let people know what his decision is.”
