Jamaican season ready to go

The Globe Insurance sponsored 2009 Jamaican Rugby League season begins this Saturday (30th May) with a double header on the Rugby Pitch at Up Park Camp.

In the opening clash, Montego Bay Cobras take on Olympic Angels starting at 2:30pm. Following that, the feature match will see a repeat of last year’s Grand Final when defending champions JDF Warriors battle it out against Duhaney Park Sharks, who hold the Globe Community Shield Trophy for winning the League last year, kick off at 4pm.

The sides met four times last season, sharing the honours, and are expected to produce a blockbusting opening to the new campaign.

Among those to watch out for, the Warriors will be looking to launch dominant prop Edgar ‘Shrek’ Herbine while the Sharks will rely on the creative play of Roy Calvert.

Both players are in line to head to England for the Carnegie Floodlit 9’s at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on 26th August.

Development Officer for Jamaica, Romeo Monteith commented, “This season looks set to be another successful year for the JRLA with teams from Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, St James and Westmoreland playing.”

“We are excited about sending several players to England who will play alongside and against professionals in August. Rugby League is definitely on the rise in Jamaica.”
