Josh Charnley to leave Warrington at end of season

Warrington coach Daryl Powell has confirmed that winger Josh Charnley will leave the club at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract.

The 30-year-old has been with the Wolves since he returned to rugby league in 2018 following a couple of years in rugby union with Sale Sharks.

Charnley has made almost 100 appearances for Warrington but Powell says the winger will not be offered a new deal.

When asked about Charnley’s future by Love Rugby League, Powell said: “He won’t be offered a contract for next year.”

Josh Charnley has scored 217 tries in 263 appearances in rugby league for Wigan, Hull KR (loan) and Warrington. He has won nine caps for England.

Powell said there will be a few “good stories” coming out in regards to player retention in the coming weeks though.

He added: “It is all ongoing at the moment. You’ll find out when we put it out there which there’ll be some good stories coming out within the next couple of weeks.”

Warrington double injury blow “nothing serious”

The Wolves will be without full-back Josh Thewlis and hooker Danny Walker for the next couple of weeks.

Thewlis picked up a knee injury in their 40-8 defeat at Catalans Dragons last week. He could return next week against Leeds or the week after against Wakefield.

England Knights international Walker has suffered a foot injury, but Powell says his return timeframe is similar to Thewlis.

Warrington face champions St Helens at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Thursday. England half-back Gareth Widdop will return for the Wolves. Stefan Ratchford will revert back to full-back in the absence of Thewlis.

Powell could hand a debut to academy product Luke Thomas against Saints this week.
