League 1 round-up: Two hat-tricks for Bradford, Newcastle stun Workington, Burns shines for Whitehaven
There were a couple of surprising results in League 1 on the weekend.
York City Knights edged past Oldham 10-6 at Bootham Crescent in a hard battle. Sam Scott and Connor Robinson both scored for the Knights, while Jack Holmes went over for the Roughyeds.
Bradford Bulls kept the pressure on York at the top of the League 1 table with an emphatic 104-0 win against West Wales Raiders in front of 826 spectators at Stebonheath Park. Jy Hitchcox and Elliot Minchella both scored hat-tricks for the Bulls.
Whitehaven put in a dominating display as they battered Hunslet 46-10 at the Recreation Ground. Jordan Burns scored a hat-trick for Haven, with Dan Abram kicking seven goals. Papua New Guinea internationals Jessie Joe Parker and Dion Aiye both scored two each for the home side.
North Wales Crusaders won their third League 1 game on the bounce as they inflicted a 36-12 defeat on Coventry Bears at the Butts Park Arena. Kenny Baker scored two tries for the Welsh outfit.
Doncaster took a step closer in claiming third place in the League 1 ladder with a convincing 50-6 victory against Keighley Cougars at Cougar Park. Russ Spiers and Jason Muranka scored two tries each for the Dons. Doncaster’s Jordie Hedges was dismissed in the first half for a high tackle, while Ritchie Hawkyard was sin-binned for striking.
Newcastle Thunder stunned Workington Town 50-22 at Kingston Park in the North East. They ran in nine tries and France international Remy Marginet put in a man of the match performance as well as kicking seven goals. Huddersfield duo Tyllar Mellor and Tyler Dickinson scored for Town.
Hemel Stags played with just 13 players as they went down to a heavy 76-6 defeat to London Skolars at New River Stadium on Saturday. Vinny Finigan, Omari Caro, Sam Nash and Matty Fleming scored two tries each for the capital club.
