League 1 round-up: Whitehaven test Bradford, Hunslet impressive, Hawkyard bags four
There were a number of big scorelines in League 1 on the weekend.
Oldham put in a professional display to beat London Skolars 44-12 at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday. Danny Bridge bagged a hat-trick for the Roughyeds, while Luke Hooley and Lee Kershaw featured on loan from Wakefield Trinity. Wigan forwards Samy Kibula and Ollie Partington played for the Skolars on dual-registration.
Nathan Chappell scored a hat-trick to help Hunslet register their fifth win on the spin as they beat Coventry Bears 40-16 at South Leeds Stadium. The Bears have lost their last 11 games. Josh Jordan-Roberts featured for Hunslet on loan from Leeds Rhinos, while Hull Kingston Rovers starlet Joe Cator represented for Coventry.
Workington Town put in a dominant first half display as they dispatched Doncaster with a 34-6 win at Derwent Park on Sunday. Fuifui Moimoi and Elliott Miller both scored two tries each for Town. Jack Blagbrough featured for Workington on loan from Leigh Centurions, while Hull FC starlets Jack Sanderson, Cameron Scott, Lewis Bienek and Jordan Lane all played for the Dons.
York City Knights were impressive yet again as they defeated North Wales Crusaders 31-4 at Queensway Stadium. Ben Cockayne was the standout player, while Hull Kingston Rovers’ Will Dagger, Will Oakes, Josh Johnson and Jordan Walne all played for the Knights.
Newcastle Thunder half-back Tom Shaw racked up a tally of 24 points to help his side ease past Hemel Stags 56-8 at Pennine Way. Liam Scott and Conor McGrath also crossed for two tries each.
Bradford Bulls were made to work by Whitehaven at the Recreation Ground. The Bulls triumphed 27-20 in front of a crowd of 1,476 in Cumbria. Joe Keyes scored twice for Bradford as well as kicking a drop-goal. St Helens duo Josh Eaves and Liam Cooper featured for Haven on loan.
Keighley Cougars bounced back from defeat to Whitehaven with a 94-0 rout over West Wales Raiders at Cougar Park. Adam Ryder, Perry Whiteley and Andy Gabriel each scored hat-tricks while Ritchie Hawkyard bagged four tries.
Bradford are currently top of the League 1 ladder, closely followed by York and Oldham. West Wales, Hemel, Coventry and London are in the bottom four.
