London pair to face off
London’s two professional Rugby League sides clash in the heart of the City when London Skolars tackle Harlequins RL at the HAC Ground in Moorgate on Friday, January, 21st.
The Capital Challenge, now in its seventh year, is sponsored by ETF Securities Ltd and the two skippers can’t wait to get stuck in to what is a vital pre-season fixture for both teams. “It will be our first real hit out,” said Quins captain Rob Purdham, “and it gives our new guys a chance to play with the team. Hopefully it will be the start of something good.
“Skolars coach Joe Mbu and his side are fired up and in great shape so I know it will be a tough first game for us at the HAC. It’s a special ground and an awesome place to play given the backdrop of the City and history of the place. I’m confident it will be a great day.”
Harlequins get their Super League campaign underway at Catalans Dragons at the Millennium Magic weekend in Cardiff on February 12
Skolars will be led for the first time by Neil Thorman, and he is confident his Co-operative Championship 1 side can cause an upset: “I’m very much looking forward to the Capital Challenge,” he said. “We have recruited well, and held onto the majority of the squad which finished strongly at the back end of last season.
“The Skolars boys have worked hard over the pre-season and are very much looking forward to the competitive challenge Harlequins will no doubt give us. I was honoured when Joe Mbu selected me as team captain and it will be great to lead the boys out at such a unique venue as the HAC.”
Their season gets underway with a home game against Widnes Vikings in the Northern Rail Cup on February 6th.
But they won’t be the only rugby stars on show, Brian Carney, the dual code international, will be the guest speaker at a special lunch prior to the kick off.
The Irish winger played Rugby League both in England and Australia and was capped by Great Britain. He also played rugby union for Munster and Ireland and is now a respected Sky Sports presenter.
The HAC Ground makes for a unique event and offers Rugby League fans and newcomers to the sport a chance to experience an exhilarating and competitive match in a superb setting.
Tickets for the match are £15 and can be purchased online at www.skolarsrl.com and for information on the Brian Carney lunch contact Howard Kramer on 020 8888 8488 or e-mail howardkramer@skolarsrl.com
