Matt Peet offers insight into Wigan’s strong start to the season

Wigan coach Matt Peet believes there are a number of factors as to why they’ve started the season strongly, but laying some foundations being the main one.

The 38-year-old is enjoying a successful start to life as a head coach. Wigan are currently joint top of Super League along with rivals St Helens as well as being in the Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday, where they will come up against Saints.

When asked what has changed from last year compared to this, Peet replied: “We’ve laid some foundations. It doesn’t matter how this journey starts, but it is more of how we continue to build.

“Any positive results we’ve had have been down to simple processes like hard work. We’ve got a very hungry group of players with a lot of desire who have been very open.

“The leadership group is a real strength of ours. Our young players get spoken about a lot but I think our leadership group is outstanding.

“We’ve got a good group of coaches within our performance staff, particularly Lee Briers and Sean O’Loughlin. I think Sean deserves special mention for making that transition so seamlessly and parting his knowledge, not just how to play the game but how to live their lives.

“I think we’ve just got a good group of people. Regardless of skill set, we are getting the right sort of people together and it is a simple focus.”

Matt Peet driven to take Wigan to Tottenham

Peet grew up supporting his hometown club Wigan in Challenge Cup finals, and he says he would love to take the town to the final in the capital on May 28.

He added: “If we win on Saturday I’ll be happy. If we can get the result for the town and the people and take the town to Tottenham then I’ll be the happiest man in the ground, I can assure you.”
