Terry Matterson has been announced as the new head coach of the USA national side.

Matterson, 46, takes over following the decision by Brian Smith to step down from the position due to a pressing family engagement.

The Tomahawks have moved quickly to appoint current North Queensland Cowboys assistant coach Matterson, who was an Australian Grand Final winner as a player.

He will be known to supporters in the UK through his time in charge of Castleford, and a successful playing spell with London around the start of the Super League era.

Matterson, who also served on the Exiles coaching staff in 2011, had this to say: “This is a really good opportunity and I know how good the experience was for Matt Elliott [former Tomahawks coach].

“This will be a fantastic chance for myself and the players in helping to spread the gospel of rugby league and perhaps even shock a few people – I’m thrilled to accept the job.”
