Matty Smith to be St Helens general

St Helens scrum half Matty Smith knows what his role in the team will be in 2017, and that is to provide leadership and to kick well.

The England international returned to Saints in the close season after leaving in 2010, initially for a spell with Salford, before moving to Wigan in 2012.

“When I left at 21 I was nowhere near the sort of player with experience that I am now,” he told the St Helens Star.

“I have been brought in to be that voice and that is what Saints have probably missed, particularly in big games.

“I think the kicking game is also a massive part of it.

“You don’t see too many teams winning it now who can’t kick the ball.

“In big games that are going to be close you need to finish your sets off well.”
