In terms of a new signing making an impact, Paul Vaughan could hardly have done much better for Warrington.

The former Australia prop has hit the ground running since his arrival at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and delighted fans earlier this week by signing a contract extension, just eight games in to his Super League career.

Vaughan, 31, will now be around until the end of the 2025 season by which time Warrington may well have finally ended their infamous league title duck, if things keep going as they have so far this season.

Daryl Powell’s side are eight from eight ahead of Friday night’s mouth-watering home tie against Wigan.

They have built up for that by announcing a new deal not only for Vaughan, but for Man of Steel contender George Williams, the former Wigan half-back who is now committed until the end of 2026.

Warrington have had their fair share of overseas front-rowers in the Super League era with mixed results. The likes of Roy Asotasi, Paul Rauhihi and Ashton Sims have pulled on the primrose and blue with mixed results.

But already Vaughan is making his way towards the top of not only that list, but of any overseas signing the club has made.

He’s already a fans’ favourite, and was named Player of the Month for both February and March.

His nearly 1,300 metres made from 150 carries, plus 196 tackles and three tries, have well and truly warmed the hearts of the Warrington faithful, who debuted a new song in tribute to the ex-Kangaroo and Italy international.

The song is “I’m Vaughany” based on the late 90s club classic by Mousse T called Horny.

Vaughan told the Wire matchday programme: “That’s pretty cool! Coming over and experiencing the fans in England was something I was really looking forward to. For the fans to take me in and make a song about me is great.

“I’m thankful for that and hopefully they can keep singing it loudly for the next couple of years!”

Vaughan will have to roll his sleeves up even further for the visit of Wigan, with the Wolves having lost Gil Dudson and Joe Philbin to suspension. Thomas Mikaele has departed back to the NRL, though the Wolves have been linked with a trio of NRL replacements for him.

That will no doubt be something that Vaughan relishes for Warrington, who are now joint second favourites alongside Wigan to win this year’s Grand Final with competition sponsors Betfred. The two sides are 11/4 behind reigning champions and current favourites St Helens (7/4).

Vaughan added: “It’s been really good and I’ve said to a few people that I probably haven’t enjoyed my footy as much as I have for a very long time. I’ve got a smile on my face, the boys are playing well and it’s nice to be rolling off the back of that.

“Life’s pretty good at the moment.”
