Liam Roach and Loz Wildbore are ruled out for the Scorpions after the duo were both given two-match suspensions by the RFL’s disciplinary committee.

Jamie Murphy and Lee Williams are still definitely out while there are doubts over Geraint Davies and Ashley Bateman. Harri Greville is also unavailable.

However, skipper Aled James returns and new signing Joe McLocklan will make his debut.

Scorpions coach Anthony Seibold said: “We look forward to having Gateshead come to South Wales as there is already a healthy rivalry between the two clubs due to our bases both being away from the traditional areas of the game.”

Thunder are boosted by the return of Matt Barron, Reece Young and David Cash.

Matt Garside (chest infection) has a 50/50 chance and Nigel Scott is definitely ruled out due to family commitments.

Gateshead Director of Rugby Chris Hood said: “The amount of talent they’ve got in South Wales, and the link they’ve got with the Super League club, means the Scorpions have a perfect set up for them at this stage. They’ll only get stronger and stronger as time goes on.”

He added: “Their go-forward is very strong. They’ve got a good pack and some good pivots.

“The key thing for us is to control the ruck and win the collisions both offensively and defensively. We can’t give away cheap ball and sloppy penalties.”
