Queensland spoil NSW party
Queensland have won the third and final game of this year’s State of Origin series, beating New South Wales 32-8 in Brisbane.
The result represented something of a damp squib for NSW supporters, who were celebrating ending Queensland’s vice-like grip on the Origin trophy for the last eight years.
The Maroons looked the better side for most of the contest, and stars such as Jarryd Hayne were prevented from shining as brightly as they had in the first two games of the series.
Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk were among the Queensland try scorers, while Jonathan Thurston put in a good place-kicking display, landing six goals.
Blues coach Laurie Daley was disappointed with the result, but felt that his men had shown great heart and quality in winning the series 2-1.
“This group of players believes in themselves,” he said.
“Sydney three weks ago was a blast and very emotional for everyone. We can get a lot better. They played well tonight.
“I’d like to thank everyone is NSW for supporting the boys and getting on board.”
Queensland legend Cameron Smith said: “A huge congratulations to Laurie, Paul and the NSW footy side.
“Its been a real tough, hard fought series. We moved a step into the right direction tonight.”
Maroons coach Mal Meninga added: “Tonight (our youngsters) stood up. We have a bright future.
“It’s bitter sweet but its nice in front of our fans. I’m proud of our boys and how they handled the week.”
