Scotland set to name European championship squad
Scotland plan to announce their European championship squad on Tuesday following a busy weekend of play-off action for their players.
Coach Steve McCormack is waiting with fingers crossed that all of his stars come through unscathed.
“I’m speaking with several players and their club coaches on Monday to check how they are and if they are fit to play three more games in two weeks,” said McCormack, now on the coaching staff at Super League champions Wigan Warriors. “Some of our highest profile players were in action over the weekend so we need to see if they have come through okay.”
Huddersfield Giants due Danny Brough and Joe Wardle were both on the beaten side in Friday night’s Super League play-off with Ian Henderson featuring for the victorious Catalans Dragons.
Hooker Henderson will feature against St. Helens in the final eliminator on Thursday, while Matt Russell may return for Warrington Wolves against Wigan on Friday night. The fullback from Irvine was knocked out in their play-off win over Widnes and missed the win at Castleford on Thursday.
In the Championship, Ben Hellewell made his last appearance for Dewsbury before his move to London Broncos as they lost at Leigh on Sunday, who included two more of Scotland‘s World Cup forwards in Oliver Wilkes and Sam Barlow. They now face the winners of Featherstone v Sheffield in the Grand Final.
Scotland open their European Championship campaign against Wales at Derwent Park in Workington on Friday 17 October before going to Dublin to play Ireland on Saturday 25 October and finishing their season against France on Friday 31 October at Netherdale in Galashiels.
