South Wales 18-22 Whitehaven

Whitehaven reduced their points deficit to -3 points after a 22-18 win over South Wales Scorpions this afternoon at The Gnoll.

The visitors opened the scoring on 15 minutes when stand off Carl Rudd kicked through and touched down his own kick. However Neil Dallimore hit back shortly after to give Scorpions the lead.

Haven managed to regain the lead right on half time with Craig Calvert scoring after some excellent work by Australian loose forward Andrew Beattie. The converted try meant Haven led 10-6 at half time.

The second half was much of the same with desperate defence by both sides in the final third of the pitch. Carl Sice extended Haven’s lead by scooting over for a try from dummy half with Lewis Palfrey adding the extras.

Haven prop David Ford seemed to make the result certain on 69 minutes with a walk in try to extend the lead to 22-6.

However South Wales came back strong in the last 5 minutes with two tries from Joe Burke. Whilst it wasn’t enough for the win, it secured the Scorpions a well earned bonus point.

A win for Whitehaven next week against Keighley would put the Cumbrians on 0 points in Championship 1.
