St Helens have asked the Rugby Football League why referee Robert Hicks didn’t send Morgan Knowles’ effort upstairs at Wembley.

Saints fell short to a shock 18-4 defeat to rivals Warrington in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley on Saturday.

Wales international Knowles went over for St Helens in the third minute but his effort wasn’t sent upstairs to the video referee, with Hicks deeming Knowles to have knocked it out of play and awarded the Wolves a 20-metre restart.

St Helens officials have since contacted the RFL for asnwers as to why Hicks didn’t use the video referee, according to the St Helens Star.

A St Helens spokesperson told the St Helens Star: “We want to keep any correspondence with the RFL private and confidential and want to congratulate Warrington on a great win.”
