The latest update on the future of Ryan Hampshire
Castleford boss Lee Radford has confirmed that Ryan Hampshire will continue with his rehabilitation with the Super League club, but still remains without a deal for 2023.
Hampshire, 28, suffered a season-ending ACL injury in June last year, having only joined the club in March on a deal until the end of the season.
The full-back or half-back managed just five games for the Tigers in 2022, having also broke his hand playing for the reserves just weeks after signing.
Hampshire found himself without a club this time last year after leaving Wakefield, but will be focussing on returning to full fitness before finding a new deal.
Radford, who recently returned to England after a trip to Samoa with the international side, provided an update on the future of Hampshire. The 43-year-old was coy on whether he would eventually be a part of his squad in 2023, but is first concentrating on getting the utility back to full fitness.
Ryan Hampshire update
“We’ll wait and see,” Radford told Love Rugby League.
“He’s just literally got on the field for his first official run on Tuesday. There’s been no movement in that (a new contract), but he’s progressing and coming along nicely with his rehab and Matty Crowther is doing a good job in getting him up to speed.
“Obviously his contract is currently expired, so we want to get him right and back on the field and give him an opportunity to put his best foot forward.
“I thought he was really good for us last year. But the salary cap dictates a lot of where you’re at in terms of recruitment.
“We’ll just have to see. I think our first challenge with Ryan is getting him back up to speed and getting him healthy and competing again.
“Personally, I think you have a duty of care when somebody doesn’t have another club at that moment of time and he’s injured playing for you. I think any club would do the right thing by the player.”
