Theo Fages: Huddersfield Giants star linked with shock switch to fellow Super League club
Huddersfield Giants star man Theo Fages is of interest to the Catalans Dragons for the 2024 season, according to reports.
L’Independant have reported that Steve McNamara is eyeing up the 28-year-old from the John Smith’s Stadium, with the French outfit likely to lose Mitchell Pearce to a return to the NRL at the end of the year.
Fages, who has won 15 caps for France, joined Ian Watson’s Huddersfield from St Helens ahead of the 2022 campaign, but has been hampered by injuries since the move.
Having been announced on a three-year deal, it was believed that Fages was on contract through until the end of 2024 – but the reports say that the further season is an option.
L’Independant state that Catalans have tried to sign the ex-Salford playmaker twice before in 2019 and 2021.
Fages won the Super League Grand Final twice with Saints, and was forced to watch from the sidelines in his final year due to injury as the Saints defeated Catalans 12-10 at Old Trafford.
He has been limited to 25 appearances for Huddersfield since, including just eight in 2023. He is currently sidelined with a quad injury.
The half-back helped Huddersfield to the Challenge Cup final in his debut season to face Wigan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, only to miss the showdown due to injury.
Huddersfield take on Catalans at the Stade Gilbert Brutus this Saturday in Super League.
Theo Fages to Catalans as Dragons prepare for departures
McNamara’s Catalans are preparing for a handful of departures at the season’s end, including Pearce and Tyrone May, who has been linked with a return Down Under with the Canterbury Bulldogs.
Pearce, 34, remains without a deal for 2024 and previously shut down rumours linking him with an immediate return to the NRL with struggling side Wests Tigers earlier this year.
However, he has since been heavily linked with a return to the NRL with former side Sydney Roosters, having made his professional debut with the club back in 2007.
Ex-England skipper Sam Tomkins is also set to hang up the boots at the end of the campaign, while out-of-contract Adam Keighran is currently of interest to Wigan Warriors, head coach Matt Peet previously confirmed.
Meanwhile in the pack, McNamara confirmed that Matt Whitley is set to return to England after five seasons in Perpignan.
Mickael Goudemand will also make the switch to Rohan Smith’s Leeds Rhinos on a two-year deal from next season, while Tiaki Chan will join Wigan Warriors.
Catalans have only confirmed the signing of Chris Satae to their squad from Hull for the 2024 campaign.
