Toulouse bolster pack with immediate signing from NRL
Super League strugglers Toulouse have signed Italy international Daniel Alvaro from NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons on a deal until the end of 2024.
The 28-year-old has made 114 appearances in the NRL for Parramatta Eels and St George Illawarra Dragons.
Although born and raised in Australia, Alvaro qualifies to play for Italy through his grandfather, who was from Calabria. He has won three caps for Italy and played in the 2017 World Cup.
Alvaro said: “I am very excited for this opportunity to join Toulouse and I can’t wait to meet my team-mates.”
Toulouse president Bernard Sarrazain said: “Daniel is an effective forward, arriving at a key moment of the season in help us in this phase of the competition. We are excited to see him in the colours of Toulouse.”
Alvaro will be hoping to represent Italy in his second World Cup this autumn.
Alvaro follows Corey Norman to the south of France
The 6ft 3in prop will link up with half-back Corey Norman at Toulouse, who he played alongside for St George Illawarra Dragons last season.
Norman, 31, initially retired at the end of last year but was persuaded to lace up his boots again by Toulouse. He has joined the French Super League outfit on a deal until the end of the season.
Norman said: “I can’t wait to join the club and meet the whole team, coaches and supporters.
“This represents a good opportunity and at the same time a challenge for me. I also look forward to acquiring the learning that this new beginning will bring me.”
Norman has made 228 appearances in the NRL for Brisbane Broncos, Parramatta Eels and St George Illawarra Dragons. He has also represented Queensland in the State of Origin arena.
