Twitter Talk: Mixed reaction to salary cap rise
The news that Super League clubs have agreed an increase to the salary cap level to £2.1m by 2020 has caused plenty of debate since being announced on Wednesday.
A number of proposals were presented by the RFL and accepted, which will mean the salary cap initially rises to £1.9m in 2018, £2m in 2019 and £2.1m in 2020.
In addition to the proposed rise, clubs voted to increase the number of marquee players permitted at each Super League club from one to two and have backed proposals that provide clubs with exemptions from the cap when bringing new or returning players to the sport.
Our latest Twitter Talk feature takes a look at the reaction to the announcement:

The salary cap increase is a good thing, but it should be compulsory that if you spend the full cap you have an academy in place #SalaryCap

@james_jdg Not operating a reserves/19's/16's is a disgrace. Just kills the game locally. Kids think "no point, I cant play for my club", real poor.

@james_jdg If RFL had any balls they should insist on SL teams having them.

With the salary cap increase, give @George7Williams whatever he wants…..

If any #rugbyleague fans would like me to explain how a salary cap increase (& 2 year rule) is GOOD for your smaller team, then please @ me.

This is a myth perpetuated by those who benefit from a salary cap. The salary cap does NOT stop clubs "going pop". Never has. Never will. https://t.co/F5h2KIiGyV

Salary cap increased in Super League. Good but not enough. Hasn't prevented financial trouble for clubs has it? Should scrap it #RugbyLeague

@loverugbyleague Good, why hold the clubs that have money back, let them spend it and hopefully keep the top British talent over here.

Moving in the right direction, will not stop the top players going to Australia. Their salary cap next yr is 10.1 million dollars ?? https://t.co/RzihZtQhJD

Good to see #salarycap being raised. Step in right direction. But clubs not operating an academy shouldn't be allowed to spend full cap.

The only issue with the salary cap issue is it's not a big enough increase. Union thing is a great idea though. #rugbyleague
— Paul Davies (@Paulindrome7) April 5, 2017
Here's a crazy idea. Why don't clubs take responsibility for their own spending & financial health. https://t.co/Z5Rj0Prl5H
— Alex Tyrer Graham (@AlexG6) April 5, 2017
So we agree as a sport to raise the salary cap. But clubs won't have a reserve grade side because of the amount it costs. #?
