Wakefield 19-18 Hull: Trinity complete comeback for important victory
Wakefield Trinity claimed their first win since April after coming from behind to beat Hull FC at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.
A double from Adam Swift, and another try from Darnell McIntosh saw Hull up 18-6 at the break. Matty Ashurst had scored Wakefield’s only try.
But second half tries from Corey Hall and Lee Gaskell forced Golden Point, with Jacob Miller stepping up to be the hero for the hosts.
Wakefield made two changes to the side that lost at Leeds in their last Super League match. Thomas Minns and Liam Kay were the ones to drop out, with Lewis Murphy and Tinirau Arona returning to the starting 13.
Meanwhile, Hull also made two changes following their win over Wigan. Carlos Tuimavave and Ligi Sao both came out of the side, while Brad Fash returned on the bench after following concussion protocols, and Cameron Scott also returned at centre.
Match Report
Wakefield were dealt a blow with just three minutes on the clock. Reece Lyne was forced from the field with an injury, and would not return.
The Black and Whites drew first blood three minutes later. Jake Connor was able to find Adam Swift out wide, who then scored in the corner. Luke Gale added the conversion to open up a six-point lead.
It took Hull until just before the half-hour to double their lead. They worked the ball well out to the right-hand side and Darnell McIntosh was able to get over. Gale was again able to add the conversion.
Just a couple of minutes later, Gale was able to add a penalty after Wakefield were caught offside.
The hosts needed to respond before the break, and they did just a few minutes later. Matty Ashurst managed to reach over and get the ball down. Mason Lino added the conversion to reduce the deficit.
HT Wakefield 6-18 Hull
Just seven minutes into the second half, it was Hull who had to deal with an injury blow. Connor was forced off seven minutes in after falling awkwardly.
As the game was approaching the final 10 minutes, Wakefield gave themselves a much-needed boost. McIntosh failed to deal with a high kick, and Corey Hall was there to score for the hosts. Lino added the conversion to make it a one-score game.
With just two minutes left, Wakefield managed to get level. Lee Gaskell managed to spot a gap, and get through it to score. Lino converted to force Golden Point.
After Gale had missed two attempts to win the game for Hull, Miller stepped up to win it for Wakefield inside the final minute of the first period.
That was a much-needed win for Wakefield, who put a bit of distance between themselves and Toulouse at the bottom of the Super League. They will hope to back this up next week when they welcome Warrington to the Mobile Rocket Stadium.
As for Hull, they missed the chance to close the gap on the top four. They travel to Catalans next Saturday.
