Wakefield Trinity contract news: Mark Applegarth pleased to see ‘fantastic leaders’ commit futures to the club
Wakefield Trinity coach Mark Applegarth says he is pleased to see ‘fantastic leaders’ Liam Kay and Jay Pitts commit their futures to the club.
Winger Kay was out of contract at the end of the season but has now signed a new two-year deal with the club, seeing him remain at Belle Vue until the end of the 2025 season.
The 31-year-old, who represented Ireland at the 2017 World Cup, has made more than 230 career appearances for Doncaster, Leigh, Toronto Wolfpack and Wakefield.
Meanwhile, Pitts, whose contract was also due to expire at the season’s end, has signed new terms until the end of next season.
The 33-year-old forward has played more than 350 career games for Leeds, Hull, Bradford, London and Wakefield.
Mark Applegarth praises Wakefield Trinity duo after signing new deals
Applegarth hailed the duo as ‘fantastic leaders behind the scenes’ as Wakefield prepare to face Hull KR at Craven Park on Friday night.
The Trinity boss said: “Jay has been outstanding all season and is an ultimate professional. His work rate is excellent.
“Liam is an excellent outside back in his own right and his versatility helps in situations such as we have found ourselves in this year.
“Fantastic leaders behind the scenes and are the sort of characters we need to drive our culture and the squad forward.”
Jorge Taufua departs Wakefield
Earlier this week, former Tonga and Samoa international Jorge Taufua was released from his contract with Wakefield so he could secure an opportunity in the Championship with Bradford.
The 31-year-old made 14 appearances for Trinity following his mid-season switch from the NRL in 2022.
Taufua has linked up with the Bulls on a deal until the end of the 2024 season.
Another player who has left Trinity in recent weeks is half-back Lee Gaskell, who has joined Bradford on a deal until the end of 2024.
