Warrington to be without Matty Ashton for Salford clash
Warrington boss Daryl Powell has confirmed that winger Matty Ashton will miss the club’s clash against Salford on Sunday in Super League.
The winger has been ruled out with a short-term glute injury, but Powell is confident he’ll only miss this weekend’s clash at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Ashton, 23, is the club’s leading try-scorer in 2022, crossing for 10 so far. He is expected to return for their Magic Weekend clash against Catalans.
Providing an injury update, Powell commented: “We’re okay, we’re pretty strong. We won’t be too far away from what we put out there last week [against Hull].
“Matty Ashton has a real bad bruising on his glute. We’re not really sure how it happened. It hampered him a little bit last week during the game. We’ve decided not to risk him.”
The Warrington boss hinted that Jake Wardle has a ‘strong chance’ of making his debut.
Joe Philbin injury blow
The side will also be without prop forwards Kyle Amor (hamstring) and Joe Philbin for the clash at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Philbin, 27, has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury. The international forward left the field against Hull with a knee injury during the first half.
Powell added: “He’s got an ACL injury and they’re one of the worst.
“To be honest, he’s in really good spirits. He’s handled it really well. Obviously he’s got a long road back but these things happen and pretty much I thought straight away that’s what it was when he went down.
“It’s hugely disappointing for him but he’ll get a lot of support from everybody here. The medical department at this club is absolutely fantastic.
“He’ll get everything he needs and looking at the timescales, he’s not going to miss too much of next season, if any.”
