Watmough set to retire
Anthony Watmough is set to retire from rugby league to help ease the well-documented salary cap issues at Parramatta Eels.
The Eels have been docked all of the 12 points they have accumulated in 2016, and have been told by the NRL that they must strip $570,000 off their current squad before they can become competitive in the NRL again.
Therefore, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Eels have submitted an application to League Central for Watmough to be declared to have a career-ending injury and thus, remove the veteran back-rower from the cap.
“I’ve got no doubt in my mind what I have to do if it comes to that, and if it comes to that I’ve got no hesitation in doing the right thing by the club,” Watmough told Channel Nine.
Watmough’s retirement would also couple with Ryan Morgan‘s exit to Melbourne Storm for the rest of the 2016 season, which should see the Eels under the cap and make them in compliance to compete for points once more.
