Weekly news update
After last weekend’s hectic Hull derby, there was a casualty for the Black and Whites, as winger Tom Lineham picked up an ankle injury.
He is now a doubt for the Challenge Cup final, a match which a lot of people have been talking about, with less than two weeks to kick-off.
Firstly Hull’s Danny Tickle and Daniel Holdsworth came out to say how much their team are relishing the final, and then from the Wigan camp Henderson Gill and Sam Tomkins both talked up the Warriors’ chances.
The Wembley showpiece promises to be a very intriguing encounter, with Hull recently transformed and Wigan struggling for wins.
Shaun Wane’s side missed the presence of captain Sean O’Loughlin as they were steamrolled by table-topping Huddersfield in Super League, with the Giants now close to securing a maiden League Leader’s Shield.
The unpredictable season is now reaching a climax and the teams that line-up at Old Trafford could come from a number of genuine contenders.
Two of those, and last year’s finalists, are Leeds and Warrington. This week saw new contracts at both the Rhinos and Wolves, with Brett Delaney extending for five years at Headingley, while the Wire confirmed 11 new deals.
Super League Round 25, which has been taken over by mental well-being charity State of Mind, began last night with a shock win for 12-man Widnes in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
They completed a 2013 Super League double over Warrington with a 16-6 win at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, despite having Hep Cahill sent-off for a high tackle in the first half.
