Wigan coach Matt Peet discusses selection headaches as Bevan French returns
Wigan head coach Matt Peet has embraced the selection headache ahead as star player Bevan French returns.
French, 26, returned to England earlier this week after a positive Covid-19 result delayed his return.
The full-back was due to arrive back in the UK two weeks ago, before testing positive at the airport in Australia.
In his absence, Jai Field has more than impressed at the back for the Warriors. He has scored four tries in the opening two games, winning man of the match on both occasions. He also has the maximum of six Man of Steel points so far.
Speaking about including French into his team after a long injury lay-off, Peet says he hasn’t thought about the potential of reserves too much but could be included elsewhere.
Matt Peet welcomes selection headaches
Peet said: “I think I’d be prepared to potentially play him off the bench if need be.
“There’ll be no rush. That’s the main thing. It’ll be sort of getting him ready and then waiting a little bit longer to get him a little bit fitter. Hopefully it’s difficult to get him back in.
“I think we all know a rock solid, 100% Bevan French gets in the team. That’s exciting. Those are the difficult decisions I want to make.
“It’s exciting. I think we could play in a style where it’s fluent and different people change positions.
“We are working along that sort of system anyway where players can float between wing and full-back and centre and wing.
“I think it’s just exciting. The same with having Zak Hardaker and Liam Marshall.
“I think fans will love it. It’ll be difficult to contain for defences.
“It’s something that I’ve always wanted, that sort of style with three full-backs is perfect.”

More dilemmas for Matt Peet
Another player who is yet to feature for the Warriors in 2022 is Harry Smith.
The 22-year-old half-back was ever-present for the side last season, scoring three tries and kicking 32 goals.
It presents another selection headache for Peet, while Joe Shorrocks is another yet to make his first appearance in 2022.
Peet continued: “It’s exactly what I want. The players know I want loads of them banging on the door; I want loads of players getting the man of the match on loan. I want our reserves to be unbelievable and I want lots of lads who are making it really difficult.
“Around that I’m willing to make the decisions that keep the team on track and keep players and their individual development on track.
“We have a plan for Harry (Smith) as well. He’s well aware of it and he will get opportunities and he’s got to take them. He’s got to improve and he’s got to show the best of him.
“He is training really well. Physically, he looks robust. He looks ready for a big season. We’re all well aware that there’s 30-odd games yet. Protecting Tommy (Leuluai) and getting Harry on the field is a massive part of our plan.
“I’m going to take loads of pride in watching Harry develop this season.”
Peet has confirmed he will stick to the same 17 from their win over Leeds for his club’s tie with Huddersfield.
